Laundry Tips, Tricks & Money Savers!

Wash laundry in cold water whenever possible. If you need to have hot or warm water at least use a cold rinse.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Throw a tennis ball & an older towel into the dryer to help cut down on drying time. The tennis ball helps toss around the clothes so that they don't get stuck together.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Hang dry as much laundry as possible - I do this with pretty much all of our clothes. Things I will NOT hang dry: towels, socks, underwear & undershirts.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Clean out lint catcher before starting every load. FYI - dryer lint works very well as fire-starter in a fireplace or fire-pit. If you do keep it, keep it AWAY from the dryer, water heater, anything flammable.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

A few things I have not be able to substitute yet are Clorox bleach & Shout stain remover. Just buy them when they are on sale &/or with coupons. Sometimes the prices are also a little better at a wholesale club. I have also only bought name brand OxiClean because I get it on sale with coupons but I have heard the store brands work just as well.
I have tried other brands of bleach & stain removers & have not had much success. I personally don't think they were worth it for the money. Clorox is the only bleach that I have found that will not change the other colors on white clothes (ex. the red pin stripes down the side of my sons white baseball pants) - generic bleach will mess the colors up. USE AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION! This has worked for me when I have put the bleach in the bleach part of our washing machine.

Pretreat/spot-treat stains with shout - let it sit for a little bit before washing. Most of the time it works well enough that I do not have to wash it a second time.

I also add a little extra OxiClean when I have tough whites to get clean. For really messy white clothes I add detergent & some OxiClean to hot water filled about 1/2 way in the washer. Turn water off, throw in pretreated whites (sprayed with Shout) & let soak for at least 15 min. Turn washer back on & wash as normal.

I use OxiClean in the 'home-made' dishwashing detergent as well.

HOMEMADE LAUNDRY DETERGENT

Make your own laundry detergent - I did this for the first time about a month ago. I hand my fingers crossed because my family has lots of DIRTY laundry (ie. white baseball pants, workout clothes, etc). I wanted to use the detergent for awhile before I posted it so that I could make sure it actually works - & it DOES! I will definitely be making it again! I checked quite a few stores & Wal-Mart was the only store that carried a few of the items & they did have some of the best prices. Head over to How She Does It for a price break down. You only need 1-2 TBSP per load (I use 2). This detergent does NOT suds up. Here's the recipe:

What you need:

A container to hold all of your new detergent - Wal-Mart sells glass jars or you can go to Home Depot or Lowes for a big bucket with a lid.

Pinned Image

1 (4 lb 12 oz) Box of Borax - Found in the detergent aisle

1 (3 lb 7 oz) Box of Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda - Found in the detergent aisle

3 lbs of OxiClean (you can either buy the small container & use the whole thing or buy the larger container & use about 1/2 - see what has a better price) - Found in the detergent aisle (was told that off brands work just as well)

2 (14.1 oz) Bars of Zote Soap or Fels Naptha - Found in the detergent aisle

2 (2 lb) or 4 (1lb) Boxes of Arm & Hammer Baking Soda - Found in the cooking aisle (any brand will work just as well)

1-2 (55 oz) Bottle of Purex Crystals Fabric Softener or Downy Unstoppables - Found in the detergent aisle (This is 100% optional. You can add as little or as much as you would like, it any at all. Just go with the scent you like the best. Again, look for coupons & sales.)

What you do:

Grate the soap bars on a box grater. I have a food processors but I was a hesitant to use it to shred the soap. If you choose to do this, do so at your own discretion.

Open all of the boxes & pour everything in. If you would like you can add ingredients in layers.
Hold the boxes low so that the powder doesn't go everywhere.

Add your shredded soap.

Stir slowly or put the lid on TIGHT & roll or shake the container.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
HOMEMADE FABRIC SOFTENER
Make you own fabric softener - I did this for the first time the same time we did the detergent. I really like this too! My family had no idea that I had switched products. Clothes are still coming out clean (looking & smelling) & soft!
What you need:
6 cups water
3 cups vinegar (it is less expensive to buy a gallon of vinegar - it can then be used for the 'homemade' dishwasher detergent & many other things)
2 cups of hair conditioner (I actually end up using almost the entire bottle - just get the least expensive, best smelling hair conditioner you can find
A pot
A whisk
Container to put it in after it cools down
Downy fabric softener ball or towel to make a homemade reusable dryer sheet (see below)
What to do:
Pour water into the pot & heat to almost boiling.
When water is HOT remove from heat & pour in hair conditioner.
Whisk or stir until conditioner is completely dissolved. Don't whisk to fast.
Add vinegar and stir.
Cool & jar.
Use in either a fabric softener ball or on a reusable dryer towel or use about 2 TBSP to 1/4 cup in the fabric softener spot in your washer.
REUSABLE FABRIC DRYER SHEETS
<span class=
No more dryer sheets. I am going to finish the last of the dryer sheets I have on hand. When they run out I am going to give this a try.
HOMEMADE FEBREZE
Haven't tried this yet but head over to Life - Family - Love for the recipe if you would like to give it a try.
USE ALL PRODUCTS AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Sometimes towels can become a little musty. I have been able to get rid of the smell with a 2nd wash in OxiClean & drying them right away. If that doesn't work for you, head over to A Contended, Common Life & try out her method.

I HAVE READ THAT THE PRODUCTS ARE OK TO USE WITH HE* APPLIANCES BUT IT IS YOUR CHOICE TO DO SO.

The following comments were taken from How She Does It. Head over to the website to check out other questions & comments.

Angela Eaton says:
question: is this safe in a HE (high efficiency) machine?
  • Danielle Kellogg says:
    I have been making my own laundry soap for about 4 years and My husband and I bought a HE washer about a year ago, I never even wondered if I could or couldn’t use my laundry soap, I just did it. We have not had any problems. I do dump a half gallon of vinegar through it every few months just to help with any build up that may be there.
  • Jen says:
    Hi Angela,
    Yes it is safe in an HE machine. I personally don’t have an HE machine but I know that this specific recipe has been used in an HE machine without any problems what-so-ever (I’ve given so much out to friends and family to try). HE machines need a detergent that is low sudsing. This recipe does not make any suds so it works really well.
  • lindsi says:
    If you have an HE washer you are going to want to omit the fabric softener from the recipe. I was speaking with repair man about proper/improper use with the HE washers and he said the worst thing you can do is use fabric softener in an HE washer and strongly recommends to skip it all together so you don’t shorten the life of your washer.

A few more comments taken from The Frugal Girls about HE*.

Sounds GREAT! I’m a little leery of the home-made stuff though because I own a high efficiency machine and the instructions were very particular about what I could use. This doesn’t sound harmful – do you think I could use it in my front load HE machine? I would LOVE to cut out the cost of fab softener that stuff is $$$
  • Terra says:
    HE machine can not handle soap suds. Normal detergent has additives that make it bubble up. The HE detergent have very little. If you make your own laundry soap you can use that in your HE machine. I don’t think there would be a problem with conditioner since it is does not bubble like shampoo.
  • kim says:
    I have an HE washer and dryer. I have been using this homemade fabric softener for about 6 months now and I could not be happier. It works great. Sometimes my laundry used to smell after washing and drying it but not anymore. I also starting leaving my washer machine door open a little. Again, this homemade fabric softener is great and I have definitely saved money. I use Suave or V05 and try to keep the scent something like a breeze or fruity scent.

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger...

"What doesn't kill you makes you stronger!"

I have been having a lot of growing pains lately.
Growing pains in:
faith
self
relationships...

Sometimes it seems as if the weight of the world is on my soldiers.
I am in a woman's Bible study & we are doing the book Fearless - by Max Lucado right now.  It is a good series & something that I really am needing right now.  It honestly kinda seems like a big support group - right on time.

One of the ladies said today, 'It's not - God won't put more on you then you can handle, it's God won't put more on you than HE can handle.'

So I guess I am going to be quite the muscle woman by the time the dust clears...

For now I just need to keep on keeping on!

Favorite Things Party!

photo credit
I'm pretty sure you have heard of Oprah's Favorite Things - in case you haven't it was an annual show she held where she revealed her favorite things from the past year & then gave everyone in the audience all of her favorite things.

photo credit

As a first event for the Real Housewives of the QC we decided to have a Favorite Things Party - a play on Oprah's but of course a MUCH SMALLER scale.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1st step - sending out the invites:
'If you have seen Oprah's Favorite Things show you know what this is all about.
Our 1st event is going to be a play on this - just a little smaller scale. ;)
Start thinking of some of your favorite things that cost around $5.00. Bring 3 of the same item with you to the party. (Example - if Target is one of your favorite things you could bring three $5.00 gift cards.)
This party is limited to the 1st 30 ladies to RSVP.  There is a limit of 30 because we have companies that are donating items so that every guest can go home with a Swag Bag.
Can wait to get girls night off the ground!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Next I started by checking out some of my friends 'Likes' on their Facebook pages to see what local companies & businesses are their favorites.  I then sent a letter to some of those companies and let them know about our idea for this event & asked them if they would like to contribute any items for the Swag Bags or give anything be raffled off.  It turned into an incredible blessing because A LOT more companies responded then I thought would & they were very excited about the idea & ready to give!
Check out everything that was in the Swag Bags!

The week before the party all of the donations were coming in
so it was time to get the bags & decorations ready.
(I made the FAVORITE THINGS banner with paint chips & cut out letters.)

Thank goodness for good friends - I needed quite a bit of help picking up all of the items.  Because the girls were such willing helpers/drivers I put together an extra little gift for them (it's always nice to know you're appreciated! - Thanks again Kendra, Niki, Amanda M, Tashiek, Leslie, Willette & Tami)

Willette was great helping get the tags together -
I didn't even need to look at them with one eye closed *wink*!
Some people had no idea what the tags meant so for those of you that don't know the tag had words from the Sound of Music...
*singing*"Brown paper packages tied up with string, these are a few of my favorite things..."

Two weeks before the party I ordered the bags from Oriental Trading Company, stuffed them with all of the goodies & put them on display!
Each bag had OVER $100 worth of items in them!  The girls also had choices with a few things.

When the ladies arrived they all put their Favorite Things they brought with them on the table.
We all talked, laughed, ate, drank & checked out the fun stuff everyone brought.

Leslie & Willette had on the same shirt, both had jeans, tall black boots & black & white belts!!!

After everyone arrived the girls got sticker tags (with "Some of our favorite things for some of our favorite girls" & their names on it) to stick on their bags so everyone knew which one was theirs.

The girls all wrote their names on 3 piece of paper & put them in 3 different bowls &
also received a raffle ticket.

Not all of the girls know each other so we went around the room & introduced ourselves & told/showed everyone what we brought & why it's one of our favorites.

After everyone said their piece, we pulled names out of the 1st bowl until every name was picked.  The ladies went up as their names were called to choose a new "favorite thing" off the table.  We did this a 2nd & 3rd time so that all the names were pulled in a different order & each girl got 3 new favorite things.

In between the table favorites we pulled the raffle tickets so each guest went home with a raffle item as well.
It kinda felt like Christmas!
...or at least until Tami won the purse that we were all drooling over...

Hope everyone had a great time - can't wait for the next one!
